Azmacort and Vancenase are inhaled corticosteroids, that are often used in the treatment of inflammatory lung diseases such as asthma. These drugs are quite well tolerated as a whole; the most common side effect is irritation in the back of the throat, often due to thrush. Proper inhalation technique and rinsing out the mouth with water after inhalations is often all that is necessary to prevent this problem. Since the actual amount of drug that is absorbed systemically is fairly small, these drugs do not usually cause the potentially severe complications associated with systemic corticosteroids, such as diabetes, cataracts, hypertension, osteoporosis, and increased susceptibility to infections.
