Question

I am an avid distance runner and decided to make the transition to triathlons. Recently I purchased a new road bike for training purposes. Right after the purchase, I aggressively climbed some of the steeper hills here in Arlington. A few days later, I had what I thought was lactic acid build-up in the area of my left leg above the knee. A week later, the pain is still there. The pain seems to move around the quad area. I cannot sleep on my stomach. There does not seem to be any swelling. I have not trained in a week. I don't plan on training (swimming, running or cycling) until this problem is resolved. Since the pain has not subsided in over a week, should I consult a physician, or just wait it out? I know I made a huge mistake by climbing too aggressively, too soon (before the muscles used for climbing had a chance to develop). Thank you in advance for any advice you can provide. Doug, sorry to hear that the quad continues to bother you. Given your level of fitness and the duration of your discomfort, I do think that seeing your physician may provide you with a perspective and opinion on what is happening and where to go from here. I would not say that you've made a huge mistake. Aggressive athletes test the limits by design. This event is a small setback in what will be a very successful career.
