West Nile Virus can cause various flu-like or more serious symptoms. It appears however that many generally healthy people may become exposed to the virus and not have any symptoms or show any sings of infection. In most healthy individuals the virus gets taken care of by the body.

In cases where individuals have other underlying health issues, especially immune system problems, the virus may manifest in various ways.

The most important thing to remember too here is that we can cause more harm than good, by using various chemical insect repellents. The chances of getting the West Nile Virus are actually very small in comparison to causing various personal health damage and environmental damage from using various insect repellent sprays.

The best way to stay safe is avoid heavily wooded or marshy areas at dusk and dawn, not have any standing water in backyards and dress appropriately when going outdoors (long sleeves and hats are best, in light colors.)
