Pain Management

I have been getting on and off chest pain, left arm pain, and jaw pain. My dr prescibed me Celebrex a couple months ago and my chest pain scale went from a 7 to a 10. Do you know why?

I have had a groin injury for the past 10 months and it's taking a long time to heal. How long does this sort of thing take? And what can I do to speed up the healing process? Anthony, Westwood

I am an avid distance runner and decided to make the transition to triathlons. Recently I purchased a new road bike for training purposes. Right after the purchase, I aggressively climbed some of the steeper hills here in Arlington. A few days later, I had what I thought was lactic acid build-up in the area of my left leg above the knee. A week later, the pain is still there. The pain seems to move around the quad area. I cannot sleep on my stomach. There does not seem to be any swelling. I have not trained in a week. I don't plan on training (swimming, running or cycling) until this problem is resolved. Since the pain has not subsided in over a week, should I consult a physician, or just wait it out? I know I made a huge mistake by climbing too aggressively, too soon (before the muscles used for climbing had a chance to develop). Thank you in advance for any advice you can provide. Doug, Arlington

I'm a 62 year old male and an active cyclist. I broke my hip about 10 years ago. It was fixed with three screws which were subsequently removed. I developed bursitis in that area about a year and a half ago and have been trying various methods of dealing with the situation. I've had physical therapy, which did not seem to do much, and a steroidal injection, which seemed to be great...up until the next time I rode the bike. This past winter I spent a lot of time at the gym working to stretch the ITB, which seems to have helped some. At this point I'm trying to manage the situation by trying to avoid intense efforts, icing after every ride and using NSAIDs (as little as I feel I can) while I try to work into longer miles. Can you recommend any other approaches? I'm particularly concerned as I have some long (up to 150 miles), tough (up to 10,000 feet of climbing) days scheduled on a cross country ride this summer. Thanks! Dave, Billerica

I am in need of a doctor to manage my chronic pain but don't know whether to consider a neurologist, as most of the pain is from nerve damage resulting from a car accident and multiple surgeries, or a regular pain doctor. I have been to see one pain doctor and he totally discounted all of the nerve damage and was not helpful in formulating a long term plan. I am just wondering if I should ask my md for a referral to a neurologist who may be able to understand my problems better and manage my pain until I heal up more, another year I'm told. Or if you have any suggestions as to specialists I should consider I would appreciate any info? Thank you.

Have a 17 year old son with supraorbital neuralgia. Nerve was damaged by trauma when he was 2. He now has constant pain in the scar area. No medications work - only thing that has worked have been nerve blocks but only temporarily. Any suggestions on how to treat it and how do I go about finding someone who is qualified to treat it. His pain is localized to a very specific spot - does not radiate. Area very tender and very sensitive. Located right above rt. eyebrow. Thanks.

Is there a cure for macular degeneration? If not, what can I do to prevent it from getting worse? Will my children get it? What causes it in the first place? Could I have prevented it by doing something earlier in life? (I am 78.)

My son is 11 months old and recently had the stomach flu. He vomited and had diarrhea for four days. His formula made the diarrhea worse. I switched to Pedialyte and it got a little better. He is fine now. What should I do if he gets this again? Is it better to give him just Pedialyte and no formula since he is eating solids? Or should I continue giving him formula even though it makes the diarrhea worse?
