Exercise & Fitness

I'm a 57 yr. old female, runner and, by occupation, an artist. Last November I developed some sort of shoulder injury. At first it presented as muscle spasms in my lats, then weakness and pain in the shoulder. Initial diagnosis was rotator cuff tendonitis, but it has been unresponsive to chiro, rest, PT, nsaids, heat, massage, ice or other treatments. I wonder if it is really the rotator cuff. After clearing up the back muscle congestion, now the pain is in the front of the deltoid, but radiates up to the shoulder attachment up along the clavicle and even up to my neck. I have limited range of motion, significant weakness, and pain, mostly in the lifting the arm up and away from my body. I'm frustrated, as I am training for a grueling event in Colorado and need to be strength training for the climbing we'll be doing. One thing that makes me think it's not rotator cuff is that it is often more comfortable to sleep ON that shoulder, which sort of stretches the muscles on that side. Any suggestions? Deb, Jaffrey, NH

One year ago I had a labral tear repaired and followed the rehab protocol which includes strengthening, stretching and endurance. I now have as much pain as I did prior to the repair and still cannot sleep on that side or lay on that hip for exercise. There was some arthritis present, but not severe. I also now have pain at L4-5 and S-1 with an anular tear and increasing pain across my lower back. I have a back specialist appointment in May, a pain clinic appt in April and I am not sure who will see the big pic here. I go to the gym 3x weekly, ride the recumbent bike and stretch as well as light weight training for my upper body. What do you recommend? Norma, Boston

I'm 29 years old and have been running since the beginning of this year. I run about 2.5 miles 4 or 5 times per week. On Sunday, I noticed my left ankle started to hurt. I ran again on Tuesday, and could barely walk on Wednesday. The pain is on the inside of the ankle and when I step "just so," it radiates up my leg to my knee. I have a leg length discrepancy (my right leg is a good 1/2 in longer and much more muscular than the left), and I wear a cork lift in my left shoe. Since I have had pain for nearly a week now, when should I see a doctor? I'm not sure what caused the injury; could it have something to do with the difference in my leg lengths? What can I do to prevent further injury, and when is it safe to run again? Susie, Carrboro, NC

I had ACL surgery about 15 years ago and about 5 years ago had another surgery to clean out some of the area. It is now bothering me again (I play racquetball) and sometimes swells. What could be going on? Will I need another surgery? Thank you. Jay, Natick

Is there anything I can do to repair a pulled groin muscle? I pulled it many years ago, but it doesn't bother me unless I stretch (as in candle pin bowling). I walk 2 miles a day with no problem. Thanks. Jack, Windham, NH

I am a 50 yr old w/m, 5`9",183lbs. I have been distance running for yrs. I ran a full Marathon (26.2) miles yesterday, the Temp. reached 81 degrees. I started cramping at the 15 mile mark. It only got worst, as both legs bagan to cramp from my Quads down to my caves. I also had bad cramps in the back of my legs. I finned the Marathon in 4:28. The same thing happened a yr ago to me, where the Temp was 36, with the wind chill factor. I used Endurox R4 about 2 hrs before and was well hydrated. I even had to stop and urinated a few times during tha Marathon. I drink at ALL water stops, Gator Aid and water. What am I doing wrong ??? One more bit of information: The night before as I was eating dinner, my left hand suddenly cramped for no reason. Later that night I felt a cramp in the back of my leg. I ran 2 miles a day, EASY, the week of the Marathon with no run the day before. Please help me. I`m a mentaly tough person, but this is so demoralizing. Any suggestions.

If you don`t mind I would love hearing your advice for my problem. I am 40 years old. 6 months ago I was up to 190lbs(in HS I was 160 and muscular). For the past 6 months I have been jogging 45 min and lifting weights 20 min ...5 days a week. I am now down to 165 and have a 17 % body fat. However my"love handles" wont go away. I know I can not do anything that will lose weight only there because you can`t target the area of fat burned. Do you suggest anything. Will they go away on their own if I continue working out or is my age affecting it? I am in great health and muscularly fit again. But the fat on my my sides looks odd because I look so fit everywhere else. I am proud to have gotten down to my weight again and achieved such low body fat again..but can I do more to get rid of the handles? Please give me any advice you think may make a difference and I will appreciate it GREATLY! Thank you and keep up the fine work!
